Colt Brennan is Back

I am a little late on this news, roughly five-weeks, but then again nobody really reads my blog…so here goes: Colt Brennan is a pro quarterback again. According to the 2.28.12 edition of the Honolulu Star Advertiser, Brennan signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

Courtesy of the Honolulu Star Advertiser:

After a stellar career at UH, where he led the Warriors to the Sugar Bowl after the 2007 season and was a Heisman Trophy finalist, Brennan was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the 2008 NFL draft. He started strong, completing 36 of 53 passes for 411 yards and three touchdowns.

But he was placed on injured reserve because of hamstring and hip injuries. In 2010, the Redskins traded for quarterback John Beck and later released Brennan in August. Brennan was picked up by Oakland, which also cut him.

In June 2011, Brennan signed with the Hartford Colonials in the United Football League for the 2011 season. But the league suspended operations of the Colonials a few months later and Brennan was not selected by any of the four remaining UFL teams in a dispersal draft.

While at UH, Brennan broke numerous records, including the NCAA Division I record for most touchdown passes in a single season with 58 and an NCAA record for highest pass completion percentage (70.4 percent).

Brennan is yet another example of why I should never be allowed to judge NFL talent or be the GM of an NFL franchise, unless it’s Madden. I thought Brennan would be a solid NFL QB, not spectacular, that hammered out a pretty good career. At Hawaii he was most accurate passer I had ever seen. Of course he played in the WAC and had contests against the University of Idaho, San Jose State, New Mexico State University and Utah State University. The four aforementioned teams are usually listed in ESPN’s Bottom 10.

Brennan wasn’t my first failure as a judge of football talent. Here is a partial list:

  • Jeff George
  • Matt Jones
  • Drew Carter
  • Andre Woodson
  • Darnell Hackney
  • Byron Leftwich
  • Andre Ware
  • David Klingler
  • David Terrell (former Chicago Bears wideout, not the MMA fighter from my hometown of Santa Rosa, CA)
  • Reggie Bush
  • Matt Leinart
  • Charles Rogers
  • Mike Williams
  • Robert Gallery

Despite less than stellar careers in the NFL those guys became core players in Madden Franchise Mode for me and hold a special place my heart. In the digital realm JaMarcus Russell isn’t a bust. He is a top flight QB with a cannon arm. Obviously this is fan fiction because we know how Russell turned out.

DPC’s Madden Roster

Like I mentioned in a prior post I got Madden 11 and started the Chicago Bears, in Franchise Mode, with a Fantasy Draft. I didn’t create the players I mentioned but like usual I drafted with an eye towards a thundering offense and with no regard to my defense (my top defensive player is Dhani Jones). I am trying to recreate the Greatest Show On Turf, so I drafted speed and top end wide receivers. Heyward-Bey is a stretch as my fourth wideout option but in many ways he reminds me of Az Zahir Hakim, during his tenure in St. Louis, great speed and so-so route running but another option to stretch the field. Hopefully weather doesn’t play a role in the game because my team is built for a dome: all speed, finesse,no running game and a completely inept defense.

  • QB: Jay Cutler, Michael Vick and Colt Brennan: Cutler has been compared to Jeff George so it’s natural that he is my new QB. That and he is Chicago Bear. Colt Brennan will eventually evolve into a DPC Madden All Star but at this point his rating is less than stellar. Vick is solid backup if Cutler goes down.
  • HB: Darren McFadden, Larry Johnson: McFadden is a 74 OVR with a 94 in speed. With some seasoning he will turn into a top back. Until he develops I figure Larry Johnson has a little left in the tank. Also, I really don’t run that much anyway.
  • FB: LenDale White: Like usual I converted White from a running back into a full back. His rating got bumped up a little bit. Like I mentioned, I don’t run much so my FB can be used as a release valve on two back sets.
  • TE: Kellen Winslow II: I wanted Greg Olsen but instead I got K2. He’s a good TE and fits in to my speed based offense. Essentially I am trying to run The Greatest Show On Turf in Chicago. Which is convenient with Mike Martz as the offensive coordinator.
  • WR: Calvin Johnson, Dez Bryant, Bernard Berrian, Darrius Heyward-Bey: Because I had the 15th pick I was unable to get Randy Moss, which maybe a blessing in disguise because he is starting to show his age. Instead I grabbed Johnson, as a younger version of Moss. To augment Johnson I grabbed Dez Bryant and the always speedy Berrian. I messed up my picks and forgot to get Devin Hester because of that mental lapse I grabbed Heyward-Bey. Besides being my fourth wideout he is also my punt returner.

I’m going to break down and buy Madden 11 for the PS3. I realize that Madden 12 will be out in August but I am cheap and behind the times so the soon to be antiquated version will suit my needs. Like I mentioned before, I am stuck in the past and during franchise mode I like to create classic players that are long retired and no longer in the game. Madden 2003 had classic players that could be put on rosters through Madden Cards. I blew up my salary cap to get Night Train Lane and he was worth every dime, even if he didn’t do the Night Train Neck Tie.

When I get the game I will immediately go to Franchise Mode, set up my roster properly, and then create some of my favorite players that are out of the league due to retirement or lack of talent. It is bit difficult to develop ratings for past greats without being hyperbolic. Because I have a Man Crush on certain players there is a tendency to make them better than they were (read: Jackson, Bo) but in the interest of maintaining correct rating factors in Madden 11 I am using track & field times and similar rating from other Madden players to develop my own rating scale for retired players.

· Bo Jackson: Speed 99 – Acceleration 99 – Strength 85 – Agility 90 *Jackson ran a 6.18 55-meters at Auburn, which is faster than Devin Hester’s best time while at The U

· Bob Hayes: Speed 99 – Acceleration 99 – Agility 99 – Catch 85 * Hayes set a world record in the 100-meters at the 1964 Olympics with a time of 10.06 seconds

· Deion Sanders: Speed 99 – Acceleration 99 – Agility 95 *Sanders ran a 6.33 60-meters at Florida State which is faster than current speed burner Jacoby Ford’s best time of 6.51

· Earl Campbell: Speed 90 – Acceleration 90 – Strength 90 – *There is no current running back like Campbell but I know he is quick for his size, 5’11” 232 lbs, so I made him a tougher, faster Cedric Benson with heart.

· Walter Payton: Speed 92 – Acceleration 94 – Strength 85 – Agility 95 – Catching 90 * In an effort to maintain full disclosure, Payton is my favorite player so his attributes maybe a bit spiked up.

· Jim Brown: Speed 94 – Acceleration 95 – Strength – 95 – Agility 95

· Rocket Ismail: Speed 99 – Acceleration 99 – Agility 97 *Rocket ran a 6.07 second 55-meters at Notre Dame which is faster than Bo Jackson and Darius Heyward-Bey

· Colt Brennan: Throwing Power 87 – Throwing Accuracy 82 – Awareness 56 *I found this rating somewhere online and it seemed accurate. Brennan doesn’t have a cannon arm. While at Hawaii he relied on accuracy. His lack of playing time explains the low Awareness rating.

· Jeff George: Throwing Power 97 – Throwing Accuracy 90 – Awareness 85 *Jeff George is a personal favorite and this may explain the high rating

Former University of Hawaii quarterback, and future DPC Madden All Star, Colt Brennan has signed with the United Football Leagues Hartford Colonials.

By Dave Reardon, The Honolulu Star-Advertiser
April 18–Quarterback Colt Brennan will return to pro football this season with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League, Brennan’s father, Terry, told the Star-Advertiser today.

Jerry Glanville was recently named head coach of the Colonials. The former NFL head coach was the defensive coordinator at Hawaii during Brennan’s first two years as UH’s quarterback in 2005 and 2006.
Hartford was 3-5 in the UFL last year. Former NFL quarterback Josh McCown started for the Colonials and is the only quarterback currently on the team’s roster. Glanville said on his Twitter feed that the team will be soon officially adding more players.
Colt Brennan did not immediately return a text message.
“This looks like a good opportunity for Colt,” Terry Brennan said in a phone interview. “I think Colt and his agents like this because playing in Canada requires a two-year contract and this doesn’t. The season ends in November and if he does well he could possibly be picked up by an NFL team.”
Brennan set numerous school, conference and national passing records and was third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2007 when he led UH to an unbeaten regular-season record and the Sugar Bowl.
He was drafted in the sixth round by the Washington Redskins. He did not play in a regular-season game in two seasons there and was released prior to last season. Brennan was with the Oakland Raiders in the 2010 preseason, but did not make the team.
Last November, Brennan was seriously injured in a two-car accident on the Big Island. He was passenger in a vehicle driven by his girlfriend, Shakti Stream. The driver of the other car, Theresa Wang, was critically injured in the head-on collision. An attorney representing Wang has filed suit against Stream.
Brennan and Glanville were together last week at an SMU practice in Dallas. That’s where June Jones is now head coach. Jones was head coach at UH when Glanville and Brennan were there.
Brennan will be 28 in August.

DPC Madden All Stars All Time Team (Offense)

  • QB: Jeff George, Darrell Hackney, Byron Leftwich
  • RB: Reggie Bush, Darren McFadden, Michael Bennett
  • FB: LenDale White

  • WR: Randy Moss, Matt Jones, Andre Johnson, Devin Hester, Drew Carter
  • TE: Greg Olson, Tyrone Calico and David Boston (switched their position from WR to TE)
  • Offensive Line: Larry Allen, Steve Hutchinson, Olin Kreutz, Orlando Pace, Joe Thomas
  • KR: Devin Hester
  • PR: Devin Hester

Due to retirements of Jeff George and Darrell Hackney my QB depth chart is a bit thin. In more modern pursuits, in Madden Franchise Mode, I have used JaMarcus Russell and Vince Young. Russell was to be the second coming of The Mad Bomber, Daryl Lamonica but he lost the plot. Young’s mobility helped my receivers run their routes to the fullest and helped attain the outer reaches of The Vertical Stretch

Matt Jones and Drew Carter are also gone. In their place I foresee Darrius Heyward-Bey, Jacoby Ford and Mike Williams, not the Tampa Bay version but the former USC standout, filling out my receiving corp.

As a GM I am an Al Davis knockoff and as a play caller I rely on the wisdom of Mike Martz. Because Madden is loosely based on reality my All Star squad would dominate the dojo in a digital world. In reality they would be the absolute inverse of The Greatest Show On Turf.

Earlier I posted that I wanted the Chicago Bears to pursue to wide receiver Randy Moss to bolster thier vertically challenged receiving corp. This notion was shot down by my main man Fontana, a lifelong Bears fan and former member of The Son’s of Ron Mexico bowling team in Phoenix.

“Comments (Moss to the Bears) like this one(On Facebook) make me wish for a Dislike button, Fontana said.”Moss is DONE DPC!”

When Moss was unceremoniously dumped last season there were rumblings and grumblings that the Monster of The Midway should garner the services of the much maligned wide receiver. According to Jon Greenberg’s piece on ESPN.com the Bears should, “Sign Randy Moss. Sign him tomorrow and pay him the $3.38 million he’s owed for the rest of the season. You can pay him in “straight cash homey,” his preferred method of paying fines, or you can pay him in unsold Jay Cutler jerseys.”

The Bears have not made any changes to their vertically challenged receiver corp and Moss is more than available. What remains to be seen is if personnel head honcho is willing to roll the dice on the possibly washed up Randy Moss.

At worse he is a malcontent that has overstayed his welcome in the NFL and he torpedoes the Bears young and impressionable wideouts. At best he provides size and a deep threat to augment the speed of Johnny Knox and Devin Hester. It’s a win win, according to this scribe and Bears’ fan. If the Bears grab Moss I am buying an number 84 Bears jersey tomorrow.

Of course if Moss is truly through and it is readily apparent that the Bears need some height at wide receiver that can either coax Matt Jones out of retirement or make a push for New York Jets standout Braylon Edwards.

Simply put, I want the Chicago Bears to sign Randy Moss. I am a Moss supporter. Always have been, always will be and the Bears are my team. It would be a beautiful combo. Moss, Jay Cutler and Mike Martz together in Chicago. The Bears need a wide receiver that is taller than 5′ 10″ and I don’t think Matt Jones is available.

Moss is definitely available, after burning bridges for three-franchises in one season, and would compliment the Bears receiving core of Johnny Knox, Devin Hester and Earl Bennett. He wouldn’t need to be the marquee wideout. He would be a deep threat and could possibly tutor the Bears young guns.

I realize that the NFL isn’t Madden Franchise Mode and that the addition of Moss could torpedo the Bears but at this point Moss is likely humbled after being dumped twice in a season.

According to KPUA.net former University of Hawaii quarterback (and DPC Madden All Star) Colt Brennan is recovering well from the injuries he sustained in a November motor vehicle accident.

KPUA.net also noted that he plans on resuming his training soon and will be staying with his family in Irvine, Ca.

Life In The DPC sends out its best for a speedy recovery for one of the best NCAA gunslingers we have ever seen.

DPC Madden All Star and former University of Hawaii, record breaking quarterback Colt Brennan is on the road to recovery and weighed in on Washington’s recent quarterback controversy. Washington recently benched Donovan McNabb in favor of Rex Grossman. In his first start Grossman passed for 322-yards, 4-touchdowns and 2-interceptions in a loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Brennan was originally drafted by Washington in the sixth-round of the 2008 NFL Draft.

Courtesy of thr Washington Post:
Remembering when we were in OTAs and stuff like that, Rex was doing a lot of things that caught a lot of people’s attention. He was the guy that would really go out there and make plays,” Brennan said. “As people have talked to me about Donovan not starting this week, one of the things I said was, ‘Dude, Rex was always catching people’s attention with his play. He came in kind of knowing the offense, and he was a guy that me and Donovan would ask, what would you have done there, and how do you think I did right there? He just had that head start kind of over everyone, knowing the offense and knowing Kyle really well. And he was kind of the guy we all learned from, because he kind of went out there and ran it the best….

“When you do know the system front and back, you start doing a lot of little things that make big impacts. Sometimes just checking it down to your back can be such a big play, especially with the backs that we have. And I think that over time, we saw Rex take chances, we saw him check it down and be smart. And the whole situation made a real positive impact: that if you can get to that level, this offense will be ran at an unbelievably efficient rate, and it will also create a lot of points and a lot of momentum. It’s tough, to be thrown into a new system when you’ve ran the same thing for 10 years. It just kind of takes time, and it sounds like people were getting tired of waiting.”

Former University of Hawaii quarterback and Run and Shoot idol of this blog has recently been released from the hospital after sustaining injuries in a motor vehicle accident.

Courtesy of NBC Sports:
“It is with heavy heart that I am able to leave the hospital today, as my prayers and thoughts remain with Theresa Wang and her family,” Brennan said in the statement. “I am so grateful for all of the support I received over the past week. I am also relieved that Shakti is close to a full recovery. I ask that the same support I received be directed to Ms. Wang as she recovers from this unfortunate accident.”
