Elton Hercules John

Elton John’s middle name is Hercules. I never knew that when you developed a stage name you also got a middle name. Having a middle name like Hercules reminds me of the episode of The Simpsons where Homer changes his name to Max Power. One of his failed name change choices was Rembrandt Q. Einstein.

Back in 2003 Roling Stone published their take on the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Your humble scribe own 51/500 or approximately 10%. I feel there are a few omissions on the list. Like Definitely Maybe by Oasis, Urban Hymns by The Verve, Tidal by Fiona Apple. All in all it is a very thorough list and it isn’t pigeonholed to one genre of music. All forms are considered but there is greater propensity towards Rock over other styles. From their Top 500 I own the following selections:

002. Pet Sounds-Beach Boys
006. What’s Going On-Marvin Gaye
007. Exile On Main Street-Rolling Stones

More Oasis News

Liam Gallagher, former front man for Oasis, believes that his brother Noel hijacked tunes from their last album together and is using the tracks for highly anticipated solo record.

Courtesy of The Independent:

“I’ve heard his fucking new record ‘cos I fucking sung on half of it,” Liam said. “Fucking nonsense… it’s all very hush-hush ’round his camp. I put up with 18 years of that fucker so I’m [not] arsed [with] what he’s doing…. When I was in America for Dig Out Your Soul, he swiped some off because he obviously wanted to do a solo album.”

Noel left Oasis in 2009 and Liam took the remnants of the band and came back with his own outfit Beady Eye. Beady Eye is set to release their debut album next month.

As of yet there is no confirmation for the release date of Noel’s solo endeavor.

Oasis

Oasis is my favorite band. I may have seen the Dave Matthew’s Band in concert nine-times but the lads from Manchester are very close to my heart. Even closer than the Lizard King. I never properly digested the crumbling of the Gallagher Brothers’ empire. I got wind of the break while I was a patient a John C Lincoln getting over a suicide attempt that would ultimately land me in a psyche ward for four days.

On August 28, 2009 I got a text message from my main man Big Sexy. Like me, Big Sexy is an Oasis fan and saw them in concert in their home town of Manchester. Rare dedication to a great band. He left me a short text message on my Blackberry that said Noel had quit Oasis and that the band had broke up. Because I was a few days removed from being in a coma I had a difficult time swallowing this reality. Of course I had purchased their latest effort, Dig Out Your Soul, listened to it twice and it is now buried somewhere in the never reaches of my Impala. I was still an Oasis man but a Life In The DPC was out of control and I couldn’t focus on the music.

Noel released a statement, that was longer than Big Sexy’s but essentially said the same thing. I had been an Oasis man since 1996 and I had always assumed that the day would come when the fighting between the Gallaghers would lead to the inlposion of the group. Truthfully I assumed that it would have happened years before, like during the excess of Be Here Now, but even though I was prepared for their ultimate demise it still stung a bit. Another part of my younger Life In The DPC no longer existed. Cue up Sad Song.

Dearly beloved,
it is with a heavy heart and a sad face that I say this to you this morning. As of last Friday the 28th August, I have been forced to leave the Manchester rock’n'roll pop group Oasis. The details are not important and of too great a number to list. But I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and band mates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new.I would like firstly to offer my apologies to them kids in Paris who’d paid money and waited all day to see us only to be let down AGAIN by the band. Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I’m afraid it’s all I’ve got.
While I’m on the subject, I’d like to say to the good people of V Festival that experienced the same thing. Again, I can only apologise – although I don’t know why, it was nothing to do with me. I was match fit and ready to be brilliant. Alas, other people in the group weren’t up to it.
In closing I would like to thank all the Oasis fans, all over the world. The last 18 years have been truly, truly amazing (and I hate that word, but today is the one time I’ll deem it appropriate). A dream come true. I take with me glorious memories.
Now, if you’ll excuse me I have a family and a football team to indulge.
I’ll see you somewhere down the road. It’s been a fuckin’ pleasure.
Thanks very much.
Goodbye.
NG.

On my bucket list I noted that I want to hear a Noel Gallagher solo record before I die. This is not nostalgic based hyperbole. I consider Noel a genius songwriter and I always enjoyed his vocal stylings more than his little brother Liam. Noel is the talented one but Liam made them international stars. Noel wrote most of the music, specifically their best work from Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory, Be Here Now and Standing On The Shoulders of Giants and I figure his possible solo endeavor will be top.

Liam, on the other hand, took the remnants of Oasis, specifically Andy Bell and Gem Archer and formed a new group called Beady Eye who have an LP coming out February 28, 2011. Andy Bell penned one of the better B-Sides for Oasis (Thank You For the Good Times) and had some good tunes with Hurricane 1. Archer showed some proclivity towards songwriting from his days with Heavy Stereo and penned Oasis’ Hung In A Bad Place. As long as they avoid any tunes writing by Liam they should be ok. And yes I will see them in concert if they ever find themselves in Phoenix.

DPC’s Bucket List

I don’t plan on dying anytime soon but I feel that if I have a Bucket List I can steer my life towards experiences that could lead to a better and possibly more interesting Life In The DPC. This is by no means a complete list, I worked on it while on my lunch break at work, but it is a starting point.

  • My Son graduating from college. Preferably USC or Miami but I will settle for Notre Dame.
  • Super Bowl, regardless of teams involved. Though I’d like to see the Bears, Cardinals or Raiders involved.
  • MLB Playoffs: Ideally the Cubs but I would settle for the Diamondbacks. I’m not optimistic enough to think the Cubs will make the World Series.
  • NBA Slam Dunk Competition
  • Tigers Woods playing a Major
  • Daytona 500
  • Bristol Motor Speedway (August race)
  • Montreal Canadiens game in Montreal
  • Chicago Bears game in Chicago. So far I have seen the Bears in Arizona, Oakland and San Francisco.
  • Another BCS Bowl game. I saw the 2008 Rose Bowl and I’d like to see the Fiesta Bowl. Which is convenient because I live 20-minutes from where they play it each year.
  • Nevada in an NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament game
  • Nevada in a Bowl Game
  • Yankee Stadium
  • Fenway Park
  • Revisit the parts of London, Amsterdam and Dublin from my study abroad odyssey in college. Due to excessive drinking and rarely sleeping I have a vague recollection of spending five-weeks in Europe.
  • Graceland
  • UFC
  • Championship boxing match in Las Vegas
  • NFL Draft and Combine
  • Marion Motley getting a statue at the University of Nevada.
  • MLB retiring Roberto Clemente’s 21 throughout the league
  • Shaft Winning a Santa Rosa City League Basketball Title
  • A bowling league championship. I didn’t spend three-semesters bowling in college for no good reason.
  • Visit Bora Bora
  • See New York City. This goes along with my desire to see a game at Yankee Stadium
  • Visit Spain
  • Visit Italy and the Vatican
  • Euro Disney
  • Ride in a NASCAR stock car
  • Meet Richard Roundtree
  • Listen to a Noel Gallagher solo album
  • Own a 1970 Chevelle
  • Visit Dealey Plaza
  • Visit the Astrodome and Olympic Stadium
  • Go to a European Castle
  • See Augusta
  • Visit all the locations that Dazed & Confused was filmed at in Austin, TX

Freedom Rock

I remember reading somewhere, I have no idea where or I would give attribution like a good journalism grad, that Freedom Rock was the first album sold exclusively on TV, like Monster Booty or NOW: That’s What I Call Music. Who knew that a seminal moment from my childhood, that I remember with great clarity, would have a lasting fiscal impact on the music industry. The saddest part of this Freedom Rock revival is that I have most of those songs on my IPod.

Courtesy of Wikipedia:

The compilation sold for $19.95 for 4 records or 3 cassette, or 2 CDs for $24.95.

The commercial featured two aging “hippies” sitting outside their tour van, while the opening riff of Derek & the Dominoes’ “Layla” plays on a boom box. Their conversation became a pop culture fixture:

Hippy #1 – Hey man, is that Freedom Rock?
Hippy #2 – Yeah, man!
Hippy #1 – Well turn it up, man!
